Only just found this buried in the past. The A2 supply is really just a super early switchmode supply. It doen't have to many foibles in the 0 crossings, but what you can run foul of, is all the voltage regulation is done from the 5v rail. If there's insufficient load on it, the rest will be all over the place. That said PC supplies so long as they still provide all the right voltages are easier to work with.
