Contact cleaner seemed to do a decent job of taking the residue away. It mostly sprayed onto a chunky metal-cased transistor and the heatsink it's bolted onto - pretty clean-able surfaces but in an awkward position so a toothbrush is an excellent suggestion, thanks.

It'll have a couple more weeks to air before the replacements get here so it's got half a chance :)
