The main reason for me is, that in KDE 3 I really had the feeling that almost all parts of the desktop worked together and could extend each other. Konqueror, by that time the file manager (and much more), could be configured just like you wanted it to look and feel. There were so much KIO plugins that just worked and were accessible through Konqueror. And there was KPrinter, a great frontend to all things printing that got lost in time. But most of all, it was a version that was developed for users that know what they are doing and that wasn't 'dumbed-down' like many other systems. You could change keyboard shortcuts everywhere, change toolbars, menus. You also had many themes THAT WORKED (not only one which really works like today). And I liked that icons etc. really had colors, it is annoyingly compilcated to reconfigure this in modern KDE. Humans can distinguish colors and it s*cks that today most toolbar icons are only b/w with the thinnest lines possible. I don't understand what you mean with "bright", as KDE 3 used gray as the main background - in contrast to a brighter white in todays Breeze theme.
