Once upon a time just a now unknown telnet client, a bit later kermit over
local network as it gave the possibility of aliases from memory. Later a
variety of terminal software while dialup was possible. More recently putty,
and "Portal" using an actual client is pretty recent for me though.

http://www.gameaxle.com/ if you're interested in looking at it at all. Its
got plenty of foibles, weird script language not related to anything, and a
borland database engine back end which likes to eat itself from time to time.
