Belt-drive turntable?  If so, the belt is sure to be the cause  
as it dries up or the material becomes unstable over time.

I had a belt-drive Technics SL-220 (something like that) which  
featured an adjustable speed control via a reference strobe  
light.  Very gimicky.  But over time, even the electronics for  
that controller started failing.
