I've considered SD-cards but as you've mentioned, I've always been a little concerned about response time and longetivity, especially with (as you mentioned) all the writes involved with a BBS. I know what someday, that 4gig SCSI drive of mine will bite the bullet. It's pretty much inevitable. I do have a new/unused 2gig SCSI drive waiting as backup (assuming it's not withered away from age) so we'll see how it goes.
