Well, part of that is the distances involved. With BBS's you were likely dealing with people who were in the same local calling area, so you at least knew you all had that in common. I think that was probably most of it right there. If there was no such thing as "long distance charged" I think the BBS scene would be the same, as in ... not really "community".
