Actually, with the current kernel's modular structure you can have an enormous kernel without having to commit more than 15% of it to memory :-) Slackware's prefered kernel is a light one which only contains the basics. It loads everything else it needs as modules. Building and rebuilding this setup is automated. I am sure you could have an even smaller kernel than that if you commited time to it.
