That's one song I've been trying off and on over the years to > learn to play on guitar more like Mark Knopfler plays it (I learned the > chords for it, but it's not quite like he plays it). The first song I learned when I picked up the guitar was Sultans of Swing, and I still can't play it properly. In fact, it's been so long since I played it I've forgotten how to play most of it from "A crowd of young boys...". and a fair bit of the outro. It's getting all the percussive bits in there. I mentioned elsewhere that there's a guitar separated track which is really useful to play along to, slow it down (VLC can do that) and repeat the bits you have trouble with slowly building up speed once you mater it, but you know all this I'm sure. If you find a lesson that teaches you the first chord is a Dm played on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fret, throw it away, It's played around the 5-6-7 frets. There's also a lot of tabs out there. Some are good, some are not, I mostly used those as a guide to put me in the right direction. I'll be in Seattle, WA next week for Pet Shop Boys/New Order concert. If you have a few hours, come drive up on the Saturday and bring a guitar (or two if you have them) and I'll show the licks. Bring beer :) .
