Mark Knopfler was in some sort of appliance store which sold washers, dryers, fridges, and...microwaves to name a few. There was a wall of TVs showing MTV and some guy coming out with all these phrases that he used in the song. He supposedly borrowed a pen and paper and started writing them down.

You can just imagine this guy who is looking at the TV, watching someone like Boy George on MTV and saying "that little faggot with the earing and the make up"...
