It only sounds like mush if you produce it on the cheap or with lousy musicians - guess what, like everything else. While not on the top of the Metal food chain, you can find good production values in a lot of Axel Rudi Pell's albums. His Mystica album comes to mind as one in which everyinstrument sounds crystal clear, for example.
