Subj : Re: Commercial Radio To : Avon From : N1uro Date : Mon Aug 30 2021 19:58:00 Hey Paul; -=> Avon wrote to N1uro <=- Av> Yep I worked on stations that were mostly Hot AC and CHR formats. That's primarily what I did as well, with some AOR and oldies mixed in. Its really helped my likes in music pretty eclectric. The first commercial station I was at was an ultra high energy CHR called hot hits! A couple guys really flaked out as it was an intense format to do. No talk-ups unless it was a ballad, only over outros. Jingle after every song too! I mean after EVERY song! Only the actual top 40 were on the playlist, with the top 15 in heavier rotation. Imagine in 1977 having to hear "You Light Up My Life" 4-5 times a DAY! lol Av> Got a few offers but turned a few down as they were more sales vs Av> on-air or (in one case) a station run in a way where it was clear the Av> staff were unhappy with management. We called the sales area "the snake pit" I never had any interest in sales. I hated doing news. I did on-air and commercial production. I'd save other talent's outtakes and splice together an annual montage for our office holiday party... tons of laughs! Av> I ended up getting called up by a PD and asked to come to an interview Av> for a a station shifting from AM to FM and changing format from night Av> talk to (what was the first of it's kind at the time in NZ) a love song Av> dedications format. I applied at this one small town CHR once, and the PD did all but laugh at me. When I was doing CHR in our 40th largest market he did part time and when he was listening to me he told me that one of his biggest mistakes was not hiring me. Av> I got the job, moved to a new city and did that shift for around 2 Av> years, then moved to afternoons and did that for another 4 years. Cool, must have been a little different for you. Av> I run a LPFM now called Total FM, you can catch it at totalfm.nz ... Av> mostly 80's and 90s music. I'm just getting back into doing some Av> announcing in recent weeks again, started recording hourly weathers Av> that play TOH too. Is it automated? I'll have to check it out.
