Yes the sersetup! That was the way to do it, and you never knew was it going to work the first time or not.

Eventually my neighbor and I found out we could use our terminal program to initiate the call (telix), then not hang, then start a multi player doom. 
I didn't realize 3 players could play. That would have been awesome.

That sounds awesome! My roommate and I played via null modem cable. Like you I had no network card so it was modems or serial lines. Long ago I could play games until dawn and not be wrecked two days later :)
