Yeah, this is true - mainly because VMware themselves only provide drivers for named hardware. You can also only run it on CPUs that have the hardware virtualisation extensions.

There is a German website (dont recall it off the top of my head), that has many drivers for consumer hardware. I've even got ESXi on my APU1D!
