I believe it is free forever, but you loose some functionality after 180 days. (The 1st 180 days are effectively a fully licensed with a lot of features - probably lost on the pi anyway, then it reverts to a standard license which I think is good enough.)

If you look around, there is a fairly easy way to reset the 180 days (or there used to be anyway).

I run docker in the VMs, so you could use it for a better "host" management (if you needed it)...
