Subj : Another Droid BBS To : All From : calcmandan Date : Thu May 28 2020 08:29:00 Hi folks, I was on agency bbs and was instantly fascinated by the Null ezine hosted by another droid bbs. The github for the ezine is untouched for over a year. Does anyone have insight on what happened? I have an interest in contributing if it can be revived. I'm a big fan of retro gaming, computing, gopher, etc and could commit to an article every few months with ansi art to accompany. There is so much I'd love to write about on my trusty TRS-80 M200. And it will give me an excuse to mirror that content on my gopher hole. Why is all of it compelling to me? Well, it's partly nostalgia (born in 74). It largely derives from a concept of retro computing and the question of whether old systems still have usage today. Well, if it didn't we wouldn't be talking about a growing retro-computing movement in 202 and look at all the fresh retro content on youtube. An example: AOPA published an article that describes rules the FAA created as a response to the pandemic. The article included three images of infographics to describe these rules. Wishing to post this info on fidonet|aviation echo, I recreated the post in an ans file no larger than 13k. One of the images from the article, alone, amounts to over a megabyte in size. So you ask "Daniel, we all have lightnight fast internet now. We don't care how large images are anymore." Yes that's true. Indeed, people seem to be racing toward that new shiny smartphone with more megapixels than ever. Video card fans go to high gear while it renders 4k images. But my point is, I could still provide the same information without the imagery. The method of information sharing is the ultimate form of mainstream web use today and BBS'ing still provides a valid method of this sharing. "Yes Daniel. You're preaching to the choir. We all know this. Like duh dude, we're discussing this on a bbs echo. This isn't exactly cherry." I know, but churches have a choir for a purpose and today I feel like singing. So, if we can kickstart that ezine back into action, I will be the first to volunteer in providing fresh content for every issue. I sent netmail to the sysop of the bbs and emailed separately on his advertised gmx account. The email came back undeliverable though. Daniel Traechin ....
