Yeah, it's a vt100 code, I couldn't find a way to disable it, but if you run through screen it doesn't do it (at least it doesn't on openSUSE). The idea behind it is for the console to be able to support graphics characters with an ascii character set i think, in other words its a compatability legacy thing.
