You only need to pack them if you delete messages, and currently the only way to delete messages is via 3rd party utils or via magimail if you limit the number of messages per base. I think it's magimaint pack or something like that, I've never actually done it :P I think Blue White does this or maybe it was vorlon? You can just delete the JAM files, but of course you will lose all the messages. Ages ago, I renamed the JAM files and set the renamed JAM base as read only so people could still read the old messages, but to post they'd have to do it in the "new" area. I have a feeling deleting messages will mess up the message flagging feature, it's something I've been meaning to look at but haven't yet.
