I rarely get rip of electronics. I use my hardware until it breaks appart, then I repair it until it breaks appart again, and only send it to recycling once it is completely unworkable.

I have a Pentium III machine that is still fully operational and I am not gonna dump it until it smokes.

That said, I think if you really don't want a piece of electronics and want to contribute a bit to the pollution of the planet, the best alternatives are a) find a friend who really has a use for it b) sell it online c) sell it to a pawn shop of second hand dealer d) send to recycle.
