The industry for music & home video didn't seem to care whether media looked alike. CDs, DVDs, blu-rays, and 4K blu-rays all look very similar, which I think is why some people sometimes confuse the media. Similarly, LaserDiscs were the same size as vinyl records.. Having the media be the same size does have the advantage that blu-ray players and 4K blu-ray players can (and are) made to be backwards-compatible with previous media.
