That's the way we made milkshakes at Dairy Queen when I worked there.  Though, we always used soft serve ice cream from the machines.  But the ice cream machines we had were rarely broken.

I thought it was funny when McDonald's introduced their McFlurry, which was obviously a copy of Dairy Queen's Blizzard (even the name is similar), and McDonald's offered fewer flavors.
