Any car I've coded requires that the engine be on. It gets enough power
at rest to light the display, but it won't read anything until the
engine is on.

If you're worried about battery drain, can I recommend replacing your
interior lights with LED replacement bulbs? I do that with most of my
cars, the lights are cheap, they throw out a lot more light, and more
importantly to me, if you leave the dome light on, it won't kill the
battery.
