The only place I've actually bought an album in FLAC format was directly from the artist (Mark Knopfler) from his web site - I saw one of his concerts, and then I saw he was recording his concerts and selling them either as a CD or lossless FLAC, and I bought the one from my local venue in FLAC format, as it was less expensive than the CD.

I've heard https://www.hdtracks.com sells lossless music though, as well as bandcamp.com (where you can buy directly from the artist).

Why not?  I think having the FLAC versions would be a good backup.  You could then re-convert the FLAC versions to another format besides MP3 if you want to (it's not ideal to re-encode MP3 to another lossy format because MP3 is already lossy).

I like to rip my CDs both to FLAC and MP3 (usually once I rip it to FLAC, I'll then convert those to MP3).  It was handy to have the ripped FLAC versions available - I used to have my music encoded as 128kbit MP3, and later I decided to re-encode them as variable bit rate (96K-320K).  That may have improved the quality a bit, though I'm not sure if it's very noticeable.
