Subj : Mothers Day To : All From : Avon Date : Sun May 14 2023 12:38:48 Over here in New Zealand today (May 14) is Mothers Day. My mum is 80 and in poor health having been battling dementia for the last few years. She went into a rest home offering hospital level care six months ago to this day. My Dad (also 80) visited her today and kindly ran a short FaceTime call from her bedside so I could wish her a happy mothers day. It was nice to see her face (she's two plane flights away and several hours travel from where I live) and to let her know I love her. She was largely eyes closed but did look at the screen for a while. Dementia is a rotten disease, it robs a person of there essence and you are left with someone who is a former shadow of themselves :( This will likely be my last Mothers Day with my mum alive. I consider myself fortunate to have had the chance to connect with her again today and indeed to have had such a wonderful, kind and caring mum during my lifetime on this Earth. Parents are something no one has any control of, a bit like who you get as neighbors where you live I guess :) but with much more impact on your life. I have been lucky to have enjoyed the parenting of my mum and dad and their efforts to raise me with values and an outlook on life that I cherish. In a few weeks time I'll fly up to visit them both. It will have been three months since I was last there.
