It uses a bridge to one of the USB3 ports and works pretty well. I've actually got three of them with 8gb rpi4 and ~480gb drives. Had intended to play with Kubernetes on them, but never got around to it. Keep telling myself I should sell them before pricing returns to normal. Only advice I have is get a 3.5-4A power cable... I'm partial to the Argon one myself... with the SATA drive connected you'll get the power warning all the time if you don't have a good power supply. -- Michael J.
