That's what I tend to buy, but economically, I think even the best-kept commercial chickens wind up living for a few months. Long enough to go through one set of laying eggs, then they become meat.

But, yeah, at least these days it's fairly rare that chickens are being fed chicken byproduct, and the "cage-free and humane" options are more likely to give the chickens a bit more space.

But always tradeoffs, on these sorts of things, I'm sure.
