We put in artificial turf in a small area for the dogs to roll around in. The rest of the yard is gravel, paving stones and succulents/dune grass along the border. It's drought-resistant and almost maintenance free. The repairs are a different issue. Luckily we have a contractor we love, he was part of a team that did a kitchen remodel. We've used him to remodel the deck area outside of my home office, do some tweaking to our family room, re-did a storage area and did some roof and siding repairs. It ain't cheap, but he's great at being thrifty where he can. He re-used a lot of material to keep with the vintage of the house and keep us from having to spend more on new materials. ....
