I remember the surgeon saying to me that they prescribe the laxative as they don't want me straining when using the bathroom, so might be a good idea anyway.

That's beyond me to answer.  All I can say is, after taking the laxative the co2 did find its way to the colon.  (Sorry fsxNet!)  ;)
