Was never a big photo dude, but in my limited experience, getting the just spot on photo, was about 95% luck hoping for the uncontrollable random factors to align.  I have one I fluked of my son maybe somewhere about a year old... He's got a big smile on his dial, crawling towards me across the lawn, he even thoughtfully hid a lot of the non-interesting parts of the backyard. Couldn't do that again if I tried.
