Normally, when using HDR, you'd need to set the camera down where it's steady so that it takes the exact same shot for all 3 (or more) exposures for HDR. With a cell phone, that can be difficult to do. Most of the time, people hold their phone in their hands when taking a photo, so it's nearly impossible to get the exact same shot each time. I've used HDR mode on my cell phone before, holding it in my hands, and I have a feeling it makes a pseudo-HDR photo - Taking just one shot but using the raw capture to adjust the exposure a few different ways and merging those into an HDR photo.
