In the San Francisco Bay area, we had MicroTimes and Computer Currents, two 
free magazines you'd find at local newsracks. They had free BBS listings, as 
long as you renewed them every couple of weeks.

They were also handy for the white-box computer store ads - there was fierce 
competition for PC sales back then.
