The way it was explained to me at the time was that there is a tremendous amount of legal or regulatory approval involved given its mission critical status not to mention the cost of lets say an MRI or X-ray system. Weatherman/Mark who posts here probably knows more, I think he runs IT for a major hospital where he lives. I keep forgetting a lot of older CNC/milling machines still run DOS.
