Luckily, in muy mom's case, I was able to get her a Brother laser printer 
with a sensible control panel and use her non-supported (on ChromeOS) 
printer for my wife - it's a better fit on her desk.

The only issues I've run into with *nix have been really old Thinkpads that 
don't support processor PAE, and even then were were workarounds.
