Oh yeah, it's definitely not just BBSes. Ham radio is the other big offender that I'm most familiar with: there's a lot of entrenched gatekeeperism there as well (which is kind of what this "big fish; small pond" mentality amounts to). I'm sure the same is true of fly anglers and stamp collectors and all kinds of other communities. Av> te> became a thing.
