I'm in It takes both to be most efficient. Washing hands and cleaning surfaces reduces exposure vectors, and the vaccine increases immune response when a person does get exposed. The influenza vaccine isn't really used to keep a person from getting the flu, but to drastically reduce the strength of symptoms when a person does catch the flu. The flu shot can be the difference between staying in bed for a couple days or ending up in the ICU.
