The UPSes we use at my current job have built in network controllers, we have 
them pointed at our internal SMTP server to alert us if something goes awry.

I'm not sure what it is about these models but if the battery reaches 
end-of-life it will shoot out two or three emails once a minute.  There's 
nothing quite like getting to your desk in the morning and seeing 1200 new 
messages in a shared mailbox.

We've since pointed that at our ticketing system, so at least now we'll only 
get one message about the problem.  Logging into the ticket you'll see the 
thousands of "updates".
