For American shows, those cuts may have been made back when the show was
syndicated.  A first-run, half-hour show was usually 22-24 minutes long, I
think, leaving 6 minutes for commercials.  When those shows are sold into
syndication, they usually cut out 2-4 minutes.

MeTV is an interesting case study.  Sometimes they show the uncut,
first-run versions of shows like the Twilight Zone or Alfred Hitchcock
Presents while, at other times, you can tell they are showing the shorter
syndicated episodes of those same shows.
