That is to say, the job was on the otherside of town, and the additional salary would mostly or all be consumed by the increased mortgage. And it wasn't even a posh suburb like Kew or Camberwell either. We were still looking in the outer suburban ring and things only became affordable at the fringes. There was no point taking a management role only to live in the fringes. My parents purchased for less than that is a fairly good area in the 80s. 5 years ago or so a house, smallish one, across the street sold for a million. Sold to an investor, of course.
