Yep. 2Tb drive's hadn't been invented yet when that controller was made.
The max was around the 800Mb/1Tb size back then.

I have, and with the amount of hardware that's gone past my hands I'm not
supprised at all.

It's just the like transition from IDE to Sata.. At first it was like a
translation thing, and then sata bacame solid and and standard.
