In the 90s I also used to use Yahoo and Altavista, as well as SavvySearch, Lycos, sometimes Ask Jeeves and others.

It's a joke.  It's not that people are being dumb.  I don't remember where it came from, but I remember people starting to say "interwebs" as a sort of joke term.

Also, I remember someone (apparently Ted Stevens) made an analogy that the itnernet is like a "series of tubes".  So sometimes now I might say "intertubes".
