I remember receiving PGP-armored mail on my home server and retrieving with 
IMAP behind a firewall. I moved to a web-based mail service when I started 
consulting and relying on mail, I think I never should have made the change.

Although, search for me was the killer app with email. I went through a 
nasty divorce and Gmail's search was great at pulling up emails that my ex 
had "conveniently" forgotten that she'd sent.   :)
