Networks have different rules.  Some are very free-speech and hands-off/no
moderation, while others are not.  Some people cannot tell the difference
or don't like it when they cannot just say/do whatever they want.

IMHO, people were always less likely to be rude on BBSes and networks that
were real names.  Back before the Internet, people were not as paranoid
about using their real name but, with Internet connectivity and various
Identity crimes on the rise I can see why they don't want to now.
