Never knew who he was until I heard a mention of him on the Simpsons, then saw him later in some documentary.

I do remember that song "They're Coming To Take Me Away" which I heard on the radio here in Australia, and never heard again until I found it on Limewire or WinMX, and was credited to Dr Demento.
