It was a similar situation when we moved into our current neighbourhood, the newer areas had fibre direct to the home while on my street (still new, but not new enough) has DSL & cable connections.  It's been 10 years and they still haven't brought fibre direct to our house yet.

It's not really a big concern though as we have the cable internet and get gigabit down (w/ 30Mb up), but symmetrical gigabit would be pretty sweet.
