Sure its a practical application of the underlying layers of linux but not something you can generally use for anything other than the hardware was designed for. While it aids in somewhat "ubiquitous" adoption, its more an industrial control model than a "user" interface. I'm not going to say its a bad thing, in fact it somewhat surprised me when I discovered it hiding in some of the previous devices I've owned.
