That is true somewhat.

Most general purpose distributions which are themselves derivative of general
purpose distributions are pretty much the same to me. The innovation is in
the original distributions that act as parents for others and in niche
distributions.

I think there is value in "appliance" distributions designed to be solutions to
specific problems, like that old Linux Gaming one. You could just take a DVD
with that to a party and netboot a bunch of computers from it and have an
awesome birthday, for example.
