Most general purpose distributions which are themselves derivative of general purpose distributions are pretty much the same to me. The innovation is in the original distributions that act as parents for others and in niche distributions. I think there is value in "appliance" distributions designed to be solutions to specific problems, like that old Linux Gaming one.
