It is a cultural thing, really.

One of the main reasons why people installs a Linux distribution on their
desktop is because they like the idea of running mainly open-source code, or
better yet, GPL or BSD licensed code.

I am not above installing a FOSS program that requires a paid subscription to
operate but nowadays I think twice before I install closed software on the same
machine.
