I use Linux, and one option is to simply switch to a text-only framebuffer, ie, no GUI, and run MultiMail and Qodem through that. Emacs is the text editor. Most of the time I just use a Window in the GUI, but on the laptop, which has a screen resolution of 1024x768, the text based framebuffer can look pretty cool.
