I think this one stems from the name of the letter versus its pronunciation..
where the letter is Zed but is usually something like Zebra for the longer
sound.

Similar in someways to the H, aitch... was supposedly corrupted my irish
priests trying to teach english, the students struggled with the aitch, so
they added an aitch to the front making it haitch...
