Because Canada's province of Ontario dips down more south of some US locations (Windsor, ON is more south than Minneapolis, MN or Burlington, VT for example) it's sometimes quicker/shorter to cut through Canada. Before June 2009 you didn't need a passport to enter the US from Canada (or vice-versa), just a driver's license or birth certificate which made impromptu trips across the border easier. I have some in-laws that live "down east" in/on Prince Edward Island. I can get there going through Canada (~1810km) or through the US as well (~1815km). For awhile it was faster to go through the US when a lot of the highways were under construction in and around Montreal. Jay ....
